At the event, you’ll get to create your own handmade washi postcard and stamp it with a special eric-designed signature seal. You’ll also receive a pack of assorted washi papers to take home.

A little story behind this workshop:
One of our hopes for this event is to bring Japan and Japanese culture a little closer to you, and offering a washi paper-making experience was something we truly wanted to make happen. However, during our research, we learned that the water in the U.S. is harder than in Japan. This harder water, which contains more minerals, makes it difficult for fibers used for washi papers to bond well - especially when trying to create thin washi paper like notebook paper. That’s when we turned to Mr. Ishikawa for help.
He told us that we could still offer a washi-making activity by using a traditional technique called Tamezuki, where the pulp mixture is scooped once and allowed to settle naturally in a wooden mold. This method works even with hard water, as long as the paper being made is thick. The challenge, however, was that the ratio of pulp, water, and neri (a thickening agent made from Sunset Hibiscus) needs to be carefully adjusted. At first, we tried learning the process ourselves by taking his classes, but without knowing the exact hardness of Houston’s water, it was difficult to prepare properly.
Just when we were about to give up, Mr. Ishikawa kindly offered to fly all the way to Houston to handle the adjustments himself at the event! We are so grateful and excited that we can now share this special hands-on experience with you.
